Not a review. A reasoning experiment.

Plenty of people review mystery novels, analyse their characters, dissect their narrative structures, or trace their literary lineage. Almost no one takes seriously the most primal desire of the mystery reader — I want to beat the detective.

Every reader of a whodunit hears the same inner voice: "Let me guess." But after you guess — were you right because you actually reasoned from the clues, or just lucky? Were you wrong because you missed something, or because the author never gave you a fair shot?

This series sets out to answer one question for every classic detective novel: If you were a careful reader, what is the earliest point at which the clues the author has already given you would let you deduce the truth?

Not by intuition, not by genre savvy — but by logic, grounded in the clues actually present in the text. Every analysis lists every clue we found — the pivotal, the supporting, and the red herrings the author planted on purpose — so you can verify each one yourself.

Two scales that measure what reasoning really looks like.

🔍
Deducibility
DEDUCIBILITY SCORE
The earliest point (as a percentage of the book) at which a reader can reasonably deduce the truth from clues already shown. Higher stars means later.
⭐Very easy — cracked before the 30% mark.
⭐⭐Fairly easy — solvable in the first half.
⭐⭐⭐Moderate — needs past the midpoint.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Hard — clues only surface late.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Extreme — essentially impossible to solve early.
🌫️
Fog Rating
FOG RATING
How hard the author works to steer you wrong — the count and craft of red herrings, narrator reliability, whether your expectations are weaponised against you.
⭐Almost no misdirection; clues are plain.
⭐⭐Mild misdirection; a few red herrings.
⭐⭐⭐Moderate; a substantial herring count.
⭐⭐⭐⭐Heavy; many herrings and hidden information.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Extreme; the narrative structure itself is the trap.

Five authors. One timeline.

Phase 1 — In progress
Edgar Allan Poe
1809–1849
Father of detective fiction. Wrote the first detective story in 1841 — The Murders in the Rue Morgue — inventing the genius detective Dupin, the locked-room template, and the "brilliant detective + ordinary chronicler" structure.
11 works
Phase 2
Arthur Conan Doyle
1859–1930
Creator of Sherlock Holmes. Turned "deduction" into a synonym for detective work — reading a man's trade from his cuffs, his travels from the mud on his boots.
10 works
Phase 3
Maurice Leblanc
1864–1941
Creator of the gentleman thief Arsène Lupin. Flipped the genre's viewpoint — the protagonist is no longer the detective but the burglar.
20 works
Phase 4
G.K. Chesterton
1874–1936
Creator of Father Brown. Solves crimes not by physical evidence but by understanding the criminal's soul — a forerunner of the psychological school.
8 works
Phase 5
Agatha Christie
1890–1976
The Queen of Crime. Specialises in finales that detonate everything you thought you understood. The author who scores highest on both Deducibility and Fog.
35+ works
